UM News Silver Show December 8th, 2010

On our last edition of UM News, we take a look at how some students are picking up a new winter sport called "thrashing". Also, we find out how some low-income students at a grade school are getting some help for the winter. This show was anchored by Gillette Vaira and Emily Adamson. Needy Closet

Montana had about a 14 percent poverty rate in 2008, rolling in as the 17th highest in the U.S. Reporter, Gillette Vaira, and photographer, Sheya Rivard, discovered how UM social work students are filling a closet at DeSmet Public School in Missoula to help kids who might not otherwise afford warm clothes this winter. Soldier Care Packages

Students at the university are showing their support for the troops. Reporter, Gillette Vaira, and photographer, Alison Kilts, interviewed the College Republicans to find out more about the care packages they send to soldiers deployed to Iraq.

Filmmakers

Some UM students have hopes for Hollywood... and others are finishing work for local screens. Students in the School of Media Arts are writing, directing, and editing their own movies. Reporter, Gillette Vaira, discovered what one graduate student is creating.

UM Bike Thefts

Students are dealing with bike thefts on campus, and the UM Police are keeping track of each reported case. Students can register their bikes with the Office of Public Safety to help them if their bikes get stolen. Police suggest using U-locks instead of cable locks to secure bikes. Reporter, Gillette Vaira, and photographer, Matt Seder, discovered how one student has dealt with the loss of his bike outside the University Center on campus.

UM Silver Show

This week, UM Silver Team reporters uncovered how students are staying fit through biking and other activities, as well as how they are helping people on and off campus. Shaun Rainey and Emily Adamson anchored the show. Drew Stanley directed and Gillette Vaira produced the newscast.

UM Tennis Recruitment

Three international athletes play on the eight-person UM Women's Tennis Team, including South African political science junior Lauren Gibson. Reporter, Gillette Vaira, discovered how the team's makeup might be different in the future.

UM Paleontology Center

Faculty, staff, and students at the UM Paleontology Center are spreading the word about fossils in order to explain state, national, and international history. This week, they hosted an event to celebrate the first National Fossil Day. But on a regular day, researchers study hidden fossils in their basement. Photographer, Matt Seder, and reporter, Gillette Vaira, found out what one graduate student is digging up.

Mayor Engen's Class

Missoula Mayor John Engen teaches a political science seminar at UM that brings in public officials from across the state and country. The Mansfield Center makes this class possible in order to provide students with leadership skills. Mature Work Force

The unemployment rate in Montana increased again in August from 7.3 to 7.4 percent. Reporter, Gillette Vaira, and photographer, Khushnuda Shukurova, spoke with Experience Works in Missoula and discovered how members of the mature work force are faring.

Recycling Overload

The University of Montana has close to 80 recycling pick-up locations on and off campus. UM News reporter, Gillette Vaira, discovered how student recycling employees are keeping up with the mass amounts of recyclables the UM campus produces.
