Composer's Benifit

If you've been a visitor to the University of Montana campus lately, you've probably noticed a lot of construction. However, putting up new facilities is not the only kind of constructing happening on campus. UM student Aaron Minnick uses sound like building blocks to compose his music. As a composition student, he relies on the critique's of others to hone his craft. A UM Impression of Oppression

In 1995, Western Illinois University decided to run an exhibit conceived by a California museum which focused on oppression. The exhibit developed under the concept of a tunnel. The exhibit uses the tunnel because of it's encompassing, narrow, and dark qualities which mirror the internal struggles of one who experiences oppression. The University of Montana brought the tunnel to campus for the first time this Fall to spark conversation for the "Day of Dialogue". Five different student groups set up stations in the tunnel and event coordinators ended up taking more than 400 students through the tunnel over the course of the three day exhibit. UM News photographer Jaime Berg and reporter Drew Trafton take us to the experience through the voices of those directly involved with the Tunnel of Oppression.

Dumpster Dive

A student group on campus decided to promote climate change awareness by spreading garbage all over the Oval. Climate Action Now! participated in Global Climate Change Week by completing a dumpster dive. A dumpster dive involves taking a sampling of garbage from dumpsters on campus and sorting out the recycling from the true trash. More specifically, the group was looking for recyclable plastics, tin, and aluminum- all materials commonly thrown away on college campuses. Here's today's newscast of UM News for the Maroon team that airs on October 13, 2009. Today's program was produced by University of Montana broadcast journalism senior Drew Trafton of Billings and directed by UM Radio-Television senior Scott Youngbauer of Lewistown. The anchors are UM broadcast journalism seniors Katrina Heser of Billings and Marnee Banks of Helena. Today's program airs on KPAX-TV in Missoula, KBZK-TV in Bozeman, KTVQ-TV in Billings and KRTV-TV in Great Falls.

We live in a fast paced world constantly defined by how quickly we can accomplish tasks.In 1998, a Rabbi from Los Angeles took this a step farther when he invented speed dating to allow local singles in his community the opportunity to meet and scout out perspective partners.A little over a decade later, speed dating has spread across the world, and in doing so, has made it's way to the University of Montana. Over the past month, the University Center on campus played host to two separate speed dating events.Photographer Grant Beaudette and reporter Drew Trafton followed a University sophomore around one of the events to see if he could find "the one".

Flu Shot Clinics in UM Dorms

Normally one would not expect to see college freshmen lining up in their dorms for a chance to get jabbed with a needle. However, this flu season campuses are taking extra precautions in light of the H1N1 strain.

At UM, pharmacy students who work for Health Services went to the dorms for the first time to vaccinate students. Photographer Grant Beaudette and reporter Drew Trafton show us how students in Knowles Hall reacted to Health Services' efforts to fight the spread of flu on campus.

Pharmacy students will be in the dorms this week as well in Miller Hall, Pantzer Hall, and the University Center from 5-7 PM on Wednesday evening and in the University Center on Thursday.

Foreign Invaders

There's a mystery behind some of western Montana's furriest foreign invaders.

The Eastern Fox Squirrel was introduced into Montana in the early 1960's. The new species found refuge in the hard-wood trees which were introduced to the state by the early settlers of Montana towns. Shortly thereafter, the native species of squirrel had been chased off and the Eastern Fox Squirrel had established it's place as the dominant squirrel species in western Montana.
