UM Triathlon Team

The UM Triathlon team is busy biking, running and swimming for their upcoming triathlon season. Team president Joshua Goldberg and team member Chris Cordingley talked to UM News reporter Marnee Banks and photographer Jaime Berg about how the team is shaping up for the 2010 season.

College Living with Diabetes

November is American Diabetes Month. Reporter Marnee Banks and Photographer Daniel Ryan caught up with one UM student, Luke Bahnmaier, who shared his experience in coping with the highs and lows of this disease. Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education, Dr. Vernon Grund, also shed light on the effects of diabetes.

Veterans Transitioning to College

Just under 500 veterans utilize the Veterans Affairs Office on the University of Montana campus. Reporter Marnee Banks and Photographer Daniel Ryan visited the office and spoke with Coordinator Justin Raap to find out how the University is helping vets transition from combat to civilian life.

Geocaching

Students on the University of Montana campus participate in many extra-curricular activities. UM Geography student Eric Leinonen showed Reporter Marnee Banks and Photographer Dariga Massenova how he often spends his free time. Leinonen led the two on a high-tech treasure hunt called geocaching. Leinonen’s Professor, Sarah Halvorson, also geocaches and explained the inner workings of the glorified hide and seek.

Here's today's newscast of UM News for the Maroon team that airs on October 13, 2009. Today's program was produced by University of Montana broadcast journalism senior Drew Trafton of Billings and directed by UM Radio-Television senior Scott Youngbauer of Lewistown. The anchors are UM broadcast journalism seniors Katrina Heser of Billings and Marnee Banks of Helena. Today's program airs on KPAX-TV in Missoula, KBZK-TV in Bozeman, KTVQ-TV in Billings and KRTV-TV in Great Falls.

Community Gardens

As the weather is getting colder, Missoulians are harvesting carrots, cucumbers, and kale from a secret garden. The ASUM Community Garden rents out plots behind Lewis and Clark Villages on a first come first serve basis. The University owns the land, provides the water and tools, but uses people with a green thumb to tend the soil. Reporter Marnee Banks and Photographer Scott Youngbauer dug up the dirt on some eco-friendly gardeners.

SpectrUM Discovery Area

Slime, eyeballs, and giant noses help teach kids about science at the University of Montana's SpectrUM Discovery Area. The interactive science museum is currently showcasing the Hands on Health exhibit, which educates kids about health and exercise science. UM News reporter Marnee Banks and photographer Daniel Ryan explored SpectrUM and the current exhibit.
